Partnership with PVCC: A Gateway to Higher Learning

Many of our residents choose to further their education at Piedmont Virginia Community

College (PVCC), a highly respected institution recently ranked as the #1 Community College

in the state of Virginia. PVCC offers an inclusive and welcoming learning environment, along

with a wide variety of academic and career-focused programs.

    Students have access to:

Traditional college courses that can lead to associate degrees or transfer to four-year

    universities

Specialized vocational training in fields such as:

    o Culinary Arts

    o Emergency Medical Services (EMT/Paramedic)

    o Fire Science and Firefighting

    o Small Engine Repair

    o Carpentry and Woodworking

Academic advising and support services to help students succeed every step of the

    way

    High School Completion Support

For young adults who are still working toward completing their high school education, Vizion

offers guided support and access to programs that lead to a high school diploma or GED. We

help students navigate the enrollment process, stay on track academically, and build the

confidence they need to cross the finish line.

    A Personalized Approach to Success

Every student at Vizion is different — with their own goals, pace, and learning style. That’s why

we work one-on-one with residents to create individualized academic plans that match their

interests and long-term goals. Our team offers:

    Regular check-ins and mentoring

    Tutoring and study support

Help with time management and academic organization

    Turning Potential Into Progress

At Vizion, academic growth is not just about earning a diploma or taking college courses — it’s

about discovering passions, building confidence, and realizing potential. No matter where

a student is starting from, we’re here to help them move forward — with knowledge, purpose,

    and pride.

    Connecting Students with Local Businesses

    Turning Skills into Real-World Experience

At Vizion Independent Homes, we recognize that success looks different for everyone — and

not every young adult thrives in a traditional college or university setting. That’s why we take a

hands-on, individualized approach to career development, helping each student discover

what excites them and guiding them toward a path that fits their strengths, interests, and goals.

    Discovering Passion Through Purposeful Work

Whether a student is drawn to the trades, creative arts, healthcare, technology, or community

service, we help them explore meaningful career options through partnerships with local

businesses, nonprofits, and training programs right here in Charlottesville.

    Students have the opportunity to:

Gain real-world job experience through internships and apprenticeships

Explore volunteer work to build both skills and community connections

Apply classroom knowledge in practical settings that inspire confidence

Build a professional network with supportive mentors and supervisors

Customized Career Pathways in the Charlottesville Community

For example, a student pursuing courses in woodworking or construction at PVCC or

CATEC may be paired with Habitat for Humanity, where they can apply their skills to building

homes and making a tangible impact in the community. Others interested in culinary arts, auto

mechanics, healthcare, or retail may be connected to local businesses for hands-on learning

    and mentorship.

Our team works closely with each resident to:

Identify strengths, interests, and career aspirations

Coordinate placements with reputable local organizations

Offer coaching, resume help, and interview prep

Ensure that the experience is enriching, purposeful, and aligned with their goals

    Building Careers from Confidence

At Vizion, our focus is not just on finding any job — it’s about helping each young adult build a

future they’re proud of. By encouraging them to lean into their strengths and take meaningful

steps toward independence, we equip them with both practical skills and personal growth

    that last a lifetime.

    Getting Started

A Supportive First Step Toward a Brighter Future

Starting something new can feel overwhelming — especially when it involves major life

changes. At Vizion Independent Homes, we want to ease those worries by offering a

welcoming, structured, and supportive beginning for every young adult who joins our

    community.

While no two first days at Vizion are exactly the same, we do everything we can to make sure

each one begins with care, clarity, and connection.

What to Expect on Day One

Upon arrival in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia, new residents are welcomed into one of our

fully furnished homes, located in safe, vibrant neighborhoods near downtown. After unpacking

and settling in, they are introduced to:

Their House Mentor and Peer Counselor

Our Program Director, who helps guide their journey from day one

Fellow residents who are also working toward independence and personal growth

We believe the first day should feel more like joining a community — not checking into a

program. That’s why our team takes time to answer questions, build trust, and begin developing

a personalized plan that aligns with each resident’s strengths, interests, and goals.

Setting Goals and Building a Plan

Shortly after arrival, each student will meet one-on-one with staff to:

Identify short- and long-term goals — academic, career, personal, and emotional

Discuss areas of growth they would like to focus on while at Vizion

Build a weekly schedule that balances structure, personal time, and progress

This schedule may include time for:

    School or vocational classes

    Counseling or mentorship sessions

Life skills training (e.g., budgeting, cooking, time management)

    Community engagement or recreational activities

Internships, part-time work, or volunteer opportunities

The Start of a New Chapter

We understand that beginning this journey may bring up nerves — but you're not alone. From

the very first day, our team is here to offer encouragement, structure, and guidance every

step of the way. At Vizion, we don’t just help young adults get started — we help them move

forward with purpose, confidence, and community.
